Frame Cross Stitch

I finally got around to buying some picture frames.  And since it wasn't just my cross stitch projects that needed framing, but my two latest production posters from New Adventures dance performances, I did those two:

And here are Klimt's Sunflowers and Klimt's The Kiss

30 Days Wild - Week Three

Week Three had Learning About Wildlife as its theme.  I wasn't attracted to any of the possibilities, but the BTO website has lots of information I've been dipping into. I did get out and about a bit - less than I'd hoped, but it was HOT so not ideal for anyone.

However, I spotted a blackbird on two separate occasions (one male, one female), so I was able to submit my observations.

And yesterday, although not actually in the garden, I saw the house martins flying around, catching flies.  And also the house roofs at one point had a whole row of starlings, shouting about something - probably the threat of rain.  This is the tree they flew off to.

And my Week 3 badge:

It’s taken me a month to post this, but on Sunday, May 25th, I checked out this year’s Doors Open Toronto with my brother. We were able to cover four locations in total: the Canadian Film Centre, The Toronto Camera Club, St. Peter's Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Toronto, and Manor Road United Church. It's time for some NYC-picking!

Now, I've already told you about the alleys (no alleys in Manhattan) and right on red (none of that either), and now it's time for - garbage.

Since the 1990s it's been the law that residential garbage in NYC has to have the recyclables sorted out. And since this year we also have to separate out the compost, though weirdly they only pick that up once a week, I've complained about this. It's completely backwards.

Anyway, as I said, it's been the law since the 90s that you can't put your cans and bottles in with your regular trash. Do people always follow that law? Oh, heck no. But if you don't and the city catches you at it they'll give you a $300 ticket, and if you don't pay they put a lien on the house. So even if you don't care, your landlord might, and if they care and perhaps only have one tenant at that location you can bet they won't just eat the cost.

And if your protagonist is even minimally conscientious she'll at least glance around for a recycle bin before tossing her water bottle in with the regular trash.

(As a reference here, our terrible neighbors, who have had sanitation and once the fire department called on them multiple times due to the trash they pile up in their yard, still separate out the bottles and cans from the regular trash. Though in their case they may somewhat optimistically believe they'll get around to redeeming them one of these days, honestly, who knows how they think.)

This rant is courtesy of Elsbeth, which Jenn has been watching. Sure, Elsbeth is a snoop and the best way to dispose of several bushels worth of murderous apple pulp was probably to flush it, but all the same - it's weird that such a generally responsible character goes straightaway to throw out her water bottle in the general trash in somebody's house without at least checking that there's no recycle bin.

Change phone provider

I had used the same phone provider since I was working in a company which, amongst other things, provided mobile phones, which meant I got staff rate.  However, since I left in 2018 the price has been slowly rising, so it's no longer a good deal and my data allowance was very limited.

Which was why I finally made the move to change provider - prompted in part by listing this as something to do this year and therefore committing myself to do it!  Having looked at price comparison websites I decided to just go to Tesco, where the staff are helpful, which meant they could do the set up for me.  I'd got a PAC code so within just over 24 hours of buying a new SIM (I'm on SIM only having bought a new phone in January) I have my old number (it's the only number I've ever managed to remember!) it was all set up.  Hooray!

WTF even is this?

"Square children's book with hex code 03fcdf for the covers"

Why. Just. Why...? Seriously, who thinks that a hex code is a better description than the name of the color in English?

(This time, I wasn't paraphrasing. I usually do, but....)

Help launch Hangsaman!

My "Hangsaman by Shirley Jackson: Exploring a Gothic Campus Mystery" one-month module with SPACE (Signum Portals for Adult Continuing Education) online via Signum University is currently "on the launchpad" for potential launch in the autumn of 2025.

Here is the official description:

"Shirley Jackson is rightly celebrated as a master of Gothic storytelling thanks to her most well-known novels such as The Haunting of Hill House (1959) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962). In recent years, however, her earlier novel Hangsaman (1951) has received new attention and critical appreciation from fans and scholars alike.

"Far ahead of its time when it was published, Jackson’s deeply personal Hangsaman is many things: a psychological study of a young woman’s coming of age; a haunting Gothic mystery; a pointed critique of gender roles, family dynamics, and higher education; a meditation on trauma and mental illness; and an ancestor of today’s dark academia storytelling. Shirley Jackson drew inspiration from a variety of sources to craft this remarkable campus novel, from folk ballads and the Tarot, myth and ritual, to a real college campus and an unsolved New England cold case of a missing sophomore student.

"In this module, we will unpack this gem of a Gothic story, following freshman Natalie Waite as she searches for her 'essential self' and discussing why Hangsaman feels freshly relevant and important to many readers today."

Here is more information on the Hangsaman module.

To help launch this module, please go here, log in, and put this module on your launchpad short-list. Thanks!

My "The Hunger Games" module with SPACE (Signum Portals for Adult Continuing Education) online via Signum University is currently a candidate for September 2025. This is a proposed first module of five, one for each of the five Hunger Games novels by Suzanne Collins. Each week will include one recorded lecture and one live discussion section. Voting runs through August 1. I hope you will join us as we explore the lessons we may learn from Panem.

May the odds be ever in our favor!

Reduce pile of greetings cards

A definite success - after my initial count of 28, plus a further 8 I discovered (carefully saved somewhere else!), the pile has been reduced to 12 cards.  Not all have been sent, as some will be 'thank you' cards for people who've helped at our church after-school club, but they are written, and therefore allocated.

Twelve cards is a reasonable number to keep, since there are occasions when we need one, so I'm happy with that.  And if anyone does want another card sent over the summer - and in particular I do have three from the small Gloucestershire village we used to live in - I will be happy to send them.
