Happy March!

Colorado weather is weirding me the fuck out. I have lost all sense of time, and it's incredibly disconcerting. I'm told it's winter, but we've had maybe two significant snowfalls this season. Mostly, temperatures are in the 60s and 70s on a regular basis but everything is brown and yellow and dead and it's just... super confusing. Intellectually, I know it's March, and I know I lived through January and February, but when I'm not thinking about it consciously, my mind has decided that it's September. It's a perpetual September. And while autumn is my favorite season, I keep preparing for winter to arrive and it just hasn't. And it won't.

I miss winter. I miss snow and dreary, gray days. I miss slogging through five or six miserable months and then all of a sudden spring arrives and everything is blue and green and golden and it's wonderful.

But the mountains are a nice perk.

Writing is... sort of happening. I have five queries out right now, so I'm giving myself permission to focus on other things.  The book I'm querying is (hopefully) the first in a trilogy, and I have books 2 and 3 that I need to outline. I know how I want both books to end - I always start with the ending first - but it's the middle that's the problem. The middle is always the problem. I hate writing the middles of stories. I also hate outlining, and normally I never do it. I just start writing and hope for the best. But if I want to be a Serious Author, I know I should probably start outlining before jumping in.

I also had a brainwave in the middle of a sleepless night and realized I needed to make some minor revisions to the first novel (the one that's out for queries right now) to tie up a few tiny loose ends I hadn't thought about until now. Except in the light of day, I realize that these minor changes actually affect the whole story, so I essentially need to go back and re-write the whole thing (all 500 pages of it, gdi). Sigh. Good thing no agent has taken the bait yet, I guess!

I'm joining different writer groups in the area and getting to know lots of fellow writers, which is awesome. There is an incredibly strong writing community out here in the Denver/Boulder area, and I love it. And I got tickets to the Gay Romance Writers Retreat that's happening here in October. One of my new writer friends wanted me to go with him, and I figured, well, what the hell. I don't really write romance (it's always a subplot in the mystery or sci-fi story I'm writing, and doesn't always end happily), but I figure it's probably good for networking. So on the off-chance anyone out there reading this is going, send me a message! I'd love to meet up.

I guess that's all from me for now, at least from a writing perspective. Here, have some mountains (this is my view every morning as I drive to work):
