I'm finally starting to play catch-up with your most recent stories. However, I'm so far behind with my feedback that I came across a fic that I hadn't even read yet -- this one! *g* I'm so glad I found this because it's sheer EXCELLENCE. I mean, you usually manage to blow me away, but this is...WOW! :-D
I love the way you not only incorporated Victor Trevor into the Sherlock canon but certain events from "The Gloria Scott" as well. I also love your explanation for why Sherlock is so bitter and cruel at the Christmas party, not to mention the real reason that Sherlock is heartbroken. I really admire the way you were able to reinterpret the second series and combine so many complicated elements beautifully.
It's hard to pick favourite lines in this story, but this passage really stood out for me:
Love is a dangerous disadvantage, he’s always believed, but he had bought Victor a ring all the same. A dangerous disadvantage indeed, because Victor’s death has made him vulnerable in ways he didn’t know existed. He is broken, cracked, Victor’s absence leaving a gaping hole in his thought processes that Irene Adler saw, and manipulated spectacularly.
