Sorry, my friend. Sherlock's just lost the love of his life; it's always going to hurt. I'm a firm believer that authorial intent means nothing, but in my own little headcanon for this story, John and Sherlock are best friends. They might complete one another in some ways (especially now that Sherlock's had this great loss) but they won't get together in the romantic/sexual sense, even after the Return.
